Consciously Curating Your Space
I have been in the midst of incredible change and transition these past few weeks — and I imagine many of you have been too. After six months of caregiving for my mom while she lived with me in my studio, we recently moved her into her own apartment. This is a milestone we are genuinely celebrating. She is feeling strong enough to embrace more independent living, in a space that is entirely and beautifully her own. In the middle of all of that moving and unpacking and reimagining, something unexpected happened. I didn't just redesign her space. I redesigned my own — in more ways than one.
Conscious Home Design
Last weekend, just days before the move, I attended a workshop on Vastu Shastra — the Vedic form of Feng Shui — and the timing felt nothing short of divinely orchestrated.
I walked in as someone who has always been captivated by design and the art of curating spaces. I walked out with a language for something I had always felt but never quite had the words for: that our environments are alive. That they hold energy. That they either support our vision or quietly pull us away from it.
And then, days later, I got to put everything I had just learned directly into practice.
We intentionally closed my mom's previous home — one she had lived in for nearly 35 years. We restyled her new space, redesigned her lifestyle, and in doing so, I found myself redesigning my own.
What Came Home With Me
From her apartment into mine, I brought my piano. A beautiful oak desk my dad and I built together. Two nightstands. Objects that carry memory, meaning, and a frequency all their own.
My space now looks and feels completely different. And here's what surprised me most — it feels bigger, even though I've brought in more furniture. That's what happens when each piece belongs. When the energy is aligned, the space expands to meet it.
This is the Art of Lifestyle Design: curating your living space to not only look good, but feel good. Because our habitat inspires our habits. When we begin at the root — the space itself — our bodies respond.
What I Learned About Direction
For three years, I had been using my kitchen bar top as both my workspace and my dining space. It never quite felt right. I constantly struggled to find focus and maintain creativity there, but in true minimalist fashion, I kept telling myself to make it work.
Then I learned that East is the direction associated with creativity, productivity, and focus — the ideal placement for a desk, a workspace, a piano. The direction of light, new beginnings, and positive energy.
Both my piano and my desk now sit on the east wall of my apartment. I noticed the shift immediately. It is remarkable what alignment can do.
I also discovered that each corner of a space is governed by a specific element. The Southeast corner is ruled by fire. Before the redesign, I had a plant there — and I had noticed its leaves were quietly scorching in the sun. I moved it to the Northwest corner, ruled by air. It is thriving now.
Even our plants feel the energetics of a space.
The Four Directions of Vastu Shastra
For those who are new to this wisdom, here is a simple introduction to what each direction holds:
North — stability, wealth, and career growth; associated with permanence and prosperity
East — creativity, productivity, and focus; the direction of light, new beginnings, and positive energy
South — strength, fame, and power; a source of abundance and life's deeper rewards
West — gains, fulfillment, and creativity; associated with prosperity and the pleasures of life
There are subtle forces shaping our lives and influencing our wellness every single day. When we are unaware of them, they quietly pull us away from our vision. When we become conscious of them, we can harness their power to amplify our creativity, our purpose, and our wellbeing.
A Few Questions Worth Sitting With
Where do you spend the most time in your space?
What direction does your desk face?
What energy is your environment currently holding for you?
You don't need to overhaul everything at once. Simply noticing is where the shift begins.
If You Feel Called to Go Deeper
I have a few spots open in April for a Lifestyle Design Experience — a full or half-day experience where I come into your space and we redesign and refine certain elements together, intentionally calibrating your environment to meet you at your next level.
If this speaks to you, I'd love to hear from you. Simply reply or reach out directly to inquire. I cannot wait to co-create with you.
I'll be sharing more reflections on lifestyle design, intentional living, and the wisdom of Vastu Shastra in the weeks ahead. This is just the beginning of a conversation I think many of you are ready to have.
Because when your space is aligned, everything else has more room to grow.
