Reclaiming Your Health: Detoxing Your Environment
Over the past few decades, our world has experienced significant changes. We’ve become more disconnected from the Earth’s natural rhythms, and this shift has had profound implications for our health and well-being.
Toxins: Their Impact on Health
The truth is, we live in a world where the landscape of toxins, chemicals, and pathogens is greater than ever before. From the food we eat and the water we drink to the products we use and the air we breathe, we are exposed to synthetic chemicals and toxins daily. Most are invisible, odorless and silent, but harmful nonetheless. Others are visible, odiferous, and evident. Exposure to these chemicals increases our body's toxic load and can compromise our health in a myriad of ways, contributing to the symptoms and conditions so many of us experience.
Chemical Cocktails
Conventional cleaning, home, personal, and beauty products are chemical cocktails. The irony is that we bathe our bodies in chemicals, clean our homes with chemicals, and wash our clothes in chemicals thinking we are cleaner because of it. But our liver and internal organ systems are dirtier from exposure to and use of these conventional products. This barrage of chemicals impacts the body in vast ways, compounding over time as exposure increases. These synthetic chemicals have profound implications. Most are endocrine disruptors and interrupt the body's natural hormonal balance, many of these chemicals are neuro-antagonists, meaning they cause to the nervous system.
Cleansing: A Vital Part of Architecting Health
This is exactly why cleansing the physical body is a foundational pillar of The Embodied Wellness Method—my signature approach to supporting your body’s healing process and creating radiant health. While our bodies have incredible innate cleansing and detoxification pathways, they have become overburdened. To truly reverse and heal from the symptoms, conditions, and illnesses that are rising exponentially, we must actively cleanse our bodies and minimize our exposure to these health-hindering substances.
Detoxing Your Living Environment
And just as we cleanse our bodies, we must also cleanse our living environment. Detoxing your home is essential foundation for creating true healing and radiant health. It's about looking at the products you use every day, from cleaning and household supplies to personal care products and beyond. By reducing the number of exposures in our immediate surroundings, we can support our bodies and enhance their innate healing abilities.
Key Ingredients to Look For:
A simple, yet powerful place to begin is to look at the ingredient labels on your products. Be mindful to look for these common chemicals on the ingredient lists of your products:
Aluminum: many conventional makeup products and deodorants commonly contain aluminum as an ingredient. Aluminum is a toxic heavy metal that is neurotoxic and creates a myriad of issues in the body, it can also contribute to infertility and reproductive health issues.
Parabens: You'll find these preservatives in many personal care products, including shampoos, conditioners, moisturizers, makeup, and shaving gels. They are known endocrine disruptors.
Phthalates: These are often found in products with a strong fragrance, like perfumes, hairsprays, and lotions. They are also used in some plastics.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS): This foaming agent is a common ingredient in products that lather, such as shampoos, body washes, and toothpaste.
Fragrance/Parfum: This broad term can be found in almost any product with a scent, including laundry detergents, household cleaners, air fresheners, and all types of personal care products.
Simple Aligned Action Steps
The process of implementing these changes begins with small, simple steps that compound over time. The following are suggested actions that can be undertaken immediately to support one's physiological well-being and to detoxify one's environment:
Read Labels: Develop a consistent practice of examining the ingredient lists of consumer products.
Product Substitution: Rather than attempting a complete overhaul, consider replacing one product at a time with a non-toxic alternative as items are depleted. Begin with deodorant and personal care products as the are in contact most intimately with your skin, thus their impact on your health his greater.
DIY Cleaning: Common household ingredients such as food-grade hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils can serve as effective substitutes for many conventional cleaning agents.
Water Filtration: Investing in a high-quality water filtration system is an effective way to reduce exposure to chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals, and other contaminants.
Organic Food: Prioritizing organic, whole foods is a strategic approach to limiting pesticide exposure.
Pesticides contain toxic heavy metals and other harmful chemicals and toxins that disrupt the body's delicate balance and systems.
